John H. Page, a former employee with the City of Aiken, is featured in an exhibit for Black History Month.
Page was born in Thomson, Georgia on August 28, 1935 and reared by his aunt in Aiken, SC. He attended school in Aiken County.
As a young adult, he worked with racehorses from ages 17 - 29 as a hot walker and groom. He worked at the Aiken Training Track from 1963 - 1965 mainly for W.C. “Mike” Freeman. He would travel with the horses after they completed their winter and spring training in Aiken. Page worked at racetracks in New York, Delaware, and Maryland.
He returned to Aiken and worked many jobs, including a stint as a drummer with James Brown, before being employed at the City of Aiken.
Page started working for the City of Aiken in 1970. He retired after 30 years of service. He began as a sanitation worker and in a matter of months became a Training/Crew Foreman, then a Sanitation Foremen and finally the Superintendent. of Sanitation and Recycling. He was the first African American Superintendent of Sanitation and Recycling.
The exhibit is open during regular museum hours, Tuesday - Friday from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.
